The latest news from
the home front: Rebeca is putting the finishing touches on year
two of her program. If you’ve read her Blog recently, you
already know that she’ll officially have one Master's in
the bag. Way to go hon! I am helping her enter data for her Master's
project which is a tedious process requiring pacification of occassional
beers - but not too many as would interfere with the data entry
process, of course.
The weather is warming nicely and I am getting out into the hills
again. The San Gabriel Mountains are surprisingly fun to hike
in, although not a place I would care to camp over night. We hope
to get up into the mountains a couple times this summer to camp
and breathe the clean air. Attention friends and family: our Six
Flags Magic Mountain season passes came with a total of ten (10)
guest passes this year so let it be known – first come,
first serve!
In
my last page update I mentioned our friends who are on an epic
cycling adventure through Asia. I don’t know if any of you
have been following the Hugens’ travels or not, but you
really should check out their Picasa site when you get a chance.
Patrick and Rachel are from Boise and they have been cycling through
Asia s ince
September. They started in Bali and are currently making their
way from the capital of Tibet to Kathmandu. They have racked up
5,600 miles so far! As I mentioned in my last web page update,
Patrick has a Canon 5D camera with some nice glass and has been
documenting their travels with many amazing digital photographs.
He backs these pictures up to DVD and sends me copies and I have
been selecting a small sample to upload to their Picasa site.
A few days after I upload them from California, Patrick and Rachel
log in from an internet café on the other side of the world
and add captions to the photos. It is truly amazing how connected
and small the world seems with this technology. It won’t
take long for you to conclude that Patrick has some serious talent
in the photography department.
I finally broke down and created a MySpace
page. Some of you MySpace addicts don’t share your profiles
with non-friends so that pretty much requires the rest of us to
join the cult. What was once the domain of nerds (like yours truly),
is now the hip and fashionable thanks to sites like MySpace. I
haven't decided how far I am going to go with it.. it pains me
to update because of all the ads.
If you share my interest in Photography, you might check out
a blog I read regularly: www.strobist.com
I discovered it about a year ago, when it first started and it
has gained a serious following since then. It is all about how
to light subjects with off-camera flash. The blog author, David
Hobby, is a flash fanatic with a humorous writing style. He is
a big fan of DIY and has been referred to as the MacGyver of Off-Camera
Flash. I’ve devoted many MANY hours to studying this stuff.
Speaking
of photography, I haven’t uploaded new photos in a REALLY
long time so I have added a few new galleries and have updated
the grpahics throughout. Someone once told me that the biggest
difference between a professional photographer and an amateur
is that the amateur will show you all of their pictures, while
the professional will only show you their best. So if the latest
stuff looks more professional, you have been successfully fooled
and if it doesn't, then don’t tell me.
I don't know when Rebeca is going to find time to update her
Blog, but she'd still like to hear from you in the comments section
so here is the link as always. Click
Here.
